THE PUNK ZINE AT THE POP UP STORE

In an analogue age long before an emergent band could be captured at a gig on an i-phone, and pixeled around the world in seconds, the zine was the only broadcast channel available to report on and discover new music. Though not exclusively a Punk thing, the creative method of producing zines, lent itself readily to the punk ethos of D.I.Y. All that was needed was paper, glue, a typewriter, a stapler, a marker pen and some sense for discovering breaking new bands, and you were on the way to being a Punk Journalist.

The parent of UK punk zines was ‘Sniffin’ Glue and Other Rock ‘N’ Roll Habits…’ or better known as simply, ‘Sniffin’ Glue’. ‘Sniffin’ Glue’ was not the first punk zine to be created as over in New York, there already was the successful zine ‘Punk’.

Even so, this iconic London zine paved the way for zines to be used as a popular publishing method for punk ideas, and before long the punk zines were being produced in bedrooms and work restrooms across the UK with titles such as Ripped and Torn, Situation Vacant 48 Thrills, Jamming! And London’s Burnin.

The zine is one of the graphic embodiments of punk culture and fittingly, an array of zine covers and pages provides the  backdrop for the Underground Hong Kong Pop- Up store.

THE EXTERNAL STEEL CAP –
“A SUBCULTURE ICON”

The External Steel Toe Cap Boots are a  product that have been associated with our Underground for four decades.

Originally designed for workers to wear in the mills, factories and foundries of the U.K., the external cap shoes and boots have been reappropriated and repurposed. Retaining their original design the shoes and boots have, in turn,  become subcultural icons.

The cast steel cap with a semi polished finish, is identified with the marking UGUK1981 and built into the boots and shoes  using a  unique construction process. Available on the 3-eyelet shoe all the way up to the towering 30 eyelet boot.

SKULL BUCKLE AND CHAIN WULFRUN

The first of our exclusives for the Hong Kong Pop-Up,

This version of the Wulfrun Creeper is built on our double sole and  features skull buckles, studs and chain detail.

The Shoe is Allgender and available in limited number as an exclsuive style at the Undegrround Hong Kong Pop-Up

THE UNDERGROUND UNION JACK BOOT

An Underground Original the Union Jack leather boot is one that we developed in the late 1980’s,  working with the tannery to produce the flag base that was matched exactly to the colours of the British flag, The red, white and blue base then has a  black  top coating applied. Once the boot has been completed the black top coating is partially removed in the finishing of the boots, to reveal the flag design.

A rebellious and punk inspired play on the flagm  producing  a unique boot .

The Union Jack Flag boot is available from the pop-up store.

Other Core Product you will find in the store

THE ORIGINAL CREEPER

Underground Creepers are a subculture classic derived from the traditional brothel creeper. Our collection of men’s and women’s creepers are available in a curated selection of materials and colours on a single, double, or triple sole. Our creepers are hand made in batch quantities in family-owned factories and include a British Made Creeper range.

“Having launched the Originals collection in 1980’s, Underground remained committed to the collection, even when the tide of fashion washed in another direction. Questioned by many as to the relevance of the Creeper – it was Underground that held the style aloft through the 90’s and 00’s, when it was shunned by many, and no doubt brought it back to the centre stage for new generations in 2010, powerfully asserting itself as an Allgender archetype.”

The Original Underground Creeper – Allgender since the 80s.

THE ORIGINAL STEEL CAP

With the growth of heavy industry, thick-soled boots with reinforced toecaps were needed. The leather boots provided protection to the feet of workers and were needed in Britain’s factories and foundries. The leather boot also became the choice of footwear of the British army. Steel cap boots – with their metal cap exposed, or concealed beneath the leather upper, became the footwear of the British working-class male. Skinheads began to emerge as a youth movement in the early 1960s. Their working-class roots were reflected in their adoption of the “Steel Cap. By the 80’s, Skinhead style became synonymous with football terrace hooliganism and violence. The decade approached its anarchic close, steel caps were favoured by Punks and their nihilism was matched by ferocious creativity.

Grunge emerged in America and during the late 80’s and 90’s, steel cap boots and shoes returned. Favoured by Riot Grrls and then by Cyberpunks and was then picked-up by fashion-forward kids in Tokyo’s Harajuku district.

These steel cap boots with rubber sole and distinctive 3 row puritan stitch remains the choice for the most uncompromising wearers. A new generation of customers in the 2020’s began embracing steel cap boots and shoes for its androgynous, authentic, and distinctive silhouette

MUISC GENRE

T-SHIRT

Northern Soul. Prog Rock. Glam Rock. Punk. 2Tone. Roots Reggae. Post Punk. New Wave. Madchester. Jungle. Indie. Dub Step. New Rave. Garage Rock. Grime. It’s the soundtrack of Britain. Black and white print on an Organic cotton T-shirt.

SPIKE

T-SHIRT

The Spike haircut is a subculture hairstyle that predates even the earliest of Punks. You have to roll back time to First Century Ancient Britain when the spiked style was a rite of passage for having slain one of the enemies, namely the Roman conquerors. Adopted by the Punk movement in the late 1970’s it took on the name of the Liberty Spike in deference to the spiked crown on the Statue of Liberty.

POST PUNK

T-SHIRT

For the POST PUNK Generation- We are all Post Punk. Post Punk is the refining of the raw art form of Punk. Lyrics don’t shout protest like Punk; but explain, discuss contextualise political and social issues. Overwhelmingly independent, usually experimental, often Avant-Garde, mostly monochrome, artistically diverse, continually moving forward and always Post.

THE RABBIT ‘R’

PADLOCK

Inspired by the lock’n’chain worn by the almighty anti-saint Sid Vicious, it was given to him by The Pretenders guitar slinger/slayer Chrissie Hynde. The story goes that he lost the keys and was unable to take it off… certainly sealing its place next to the safety pin in the Accessory Hall of Fame.  This is Punk History rewritten for 2018 and beyond.

I’M A MESS

T-SHIRT

Sid Vicious was rarely seen without his I’m a Mess badge and the T shirt is a homage to that

The badge was originally a giveaway with a record from band Stormtrooper. Sid snapped up a copy and a badge and the rest is history.

THE ALBION UNION JACK

PADLOCK

This all steel authentic padlock is produced in the U.K. in the home of the lock industry of the West Midlands.

Albion is an alternative name for Great Britain steeped in ancient folklore. A fitting name for a lock that represents alternative Britain. The combination of the Union Flag and a padlock creates the ultimate punk choker.
