Platform shoes and boots have a long lineage stretching from the theatrical shoes worn in ancient Greek Theatre, through the wooden Okubo worn by Maiko and Geishas in Japan, to the “pattens “worn in eighteenth century Europe to elevate the nobility above the sewage on urban streets.
The modern alliteration of the platform saw its appearance as a “Go-Go “boot in the “swinging sixties” followed by the Glammed up androgynous version in the 1970s that went from Bowie to disco within the decade. The early eighties saw the platform heels in Goth mode and in the 1990’s it was the turn of Cool Britannia with the Spice Girls taking on the footwear genre.
The 2000s and the platform keeps returning and with the “flatform “trend elevating the heel height to new levels.
The Underground Platform heel collection draws together some of our original platform styles from the 1980’s and 1990’s together with our contemporary designs.
