SANTARÉM BRAND OUTPOST
Our Santarém Brand Outpost
Our Brand Outpost in Santarém is a collaboration with Milk Records, an independent record store and cultural space at the heart of the city’s alternative music scene. Located in what is often described as the “Gothic Capital” of Portugal, this Brand Outpost reflects both the historic character of Santarém and the contemporary underground culture that thrives there.
Working closely with local businesses and creative communities, the Santarém Brand Outpost embodies the core principles of the Underground England Brand Outpost concept: rooted in place, driven by music and subculture, and built around shared values of independence, authenticity, and community.
UNDERGROUND AT MILK RECORDS SANTARÉM
Located in the historic city of Santarém, Milk Records is more than a record shop, it is a cultural hub at the centre of Portugal’s independent and underground music scene. With a carefully curated selection of vinyl spanning post-punk, goth, experimental, electronic, and alternative genres, Milk Records is deeply embedded in the local community. The space regularly hosts in-store performances, DJ sets, radio broadcasts, and special events, providing a platform for both emerging Portuguese artists and international acts, while fostering meaningful connections between music, place, and people.
As an Underground England Brand Outpost, Milk Records extends this music-led ethos into a focused selection of Underground footwear together with a curated selection of clothing and accessories. The edit reflects decades of shared subcultural heritage, bringing together classic silhouettes such as creepers, steel-cap boots, and gothic styles, footwear long associated with punk, post-punk, and alternative music cultures. Presented within the context of a working record store and live space, Underground at Milk Records represents a natural meeting point between sound, style, and underground identity.
At the heart of it all is Milk, curator, broadcaster, and connector, whose instinctive approach to music, community, and underground culture shapes the tone of the space and gives the Santarém Brand Outpost its distinct voice.

THE EXTERNAL STEEL CAP –
“A SUBCULTURE ICON”
The External Steel Toe Cap Boots are a product that have been associated with our Underground for four decades.
Originally designed for workers to wear in the mills, factories and foundries of the U.K., the external cap shoes and boots have been reappropriated and repurposed. Retaining their original design the shoes and boots have, in turn, become subcultural icons.
The cast steel cap with a semi polished finish, is identified with the marking UGUK1981 and built into the boots and shoes using a unique construction process. Available on the 3-eyelet shoe all the way up to the towering 30 eyelet boot.
THE UNDERGROUND UNION JACK BOOT
An Underground Original the Union Jack leather boot is one that we developed in the late 1980’s, working with the tannery to produce the flag base that was matched exactly to the colours of the British flag, The red, white and blue base then has a black top coating applied. Once the boot has been completed the black top coating is partially removed in the finishing of the boots, to reveal the flag design.
A rebellious and punk inspired play on the flagm producing a unique boot .
The Union Jack Flag boot is available from the Santarém Brand Outpost.

THE ORIGINAL CREEPER
Underground Creepers are a subculture classic derived from the traditional brothel creeper. Our collection of men’s and women’s creepers are available in a curated selection of materials and colours on a single, double, or triple sole. Our creepers are hand made in batch quantities in family-owned factories and include a British Made Creeper range.
“Having launched the Originals collection in 1980’s, Underground remained committed to the collection, even when the tide of fashion washed in another direction. Questioned by many as to the relevance of the Creeper – it was Underground that held the style aloft through the 90’s and 00’s, when it was shunned by many, and no doubt brought it back to the centre stage for new generations in 2010, powerfully asserting itself as an Allgender archetype.”
The Original Underground Creeper – Allgender since the 80s.
THE ORIGINAL STEEL CAP
With the growth of heavy industry, thick-soled boots with reinforced toecaps were needed. The leather boots provided protection to the feet of workers and were needed in Britain’s factories and foundries. The leather boot also became the choice of footwear of the British army. Steel cap boots – with their metal cap exposed, or concealed beneath the leather upper, became the footwear of the British working-class male. Skinheads began to emerge as a youth movement in the early 1960s. Their working-class roots were reflected in their adoption of the “Steel Cap. By the 80’s, Skinhead style became synonymous with football terrace hooliganism and violence. The decade approached its anarchic close, steel caps were favoured by Punks and their nihilism was matched by ferocious creativity.
Grunge emerged in America and during the late 80’s and 90’s, steel cap boots and shoes returned. Favoured by Riot Grrls and then by Cyberpunks and was then picked-up by fashion-forward kids in Tokyo’s Harajuku district.
These steel cap boots with rubber sole and distinctive 3 row puritan stitch remains the choice for the most uncompromising wearers. A new generation of customers in the 2020’s began embracing steel cap boots and shoes for its androgynous, authentic, and distinctive silhouette.

SANTARÉM – THE GOTHIC CAPITAL OF PORTUGAL
Rising above the slow-moving Tagus River, Santarém is a city shaped by shadow as much as stone. Known as Portugal’s “Gothic Capital,” Santarém’s identity was forged in the Middle Ages, when it stood as a fortified stronghold and royal seat of power. Its skyline remains punctuated by Gothic churches, monasteries, and weathered walls, many dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. Structures such as the Igreja da Graça carry the visual language of the period, pointed arches, heavy masonry, and solemn proportions, imbuing the city with a sense of restraint, gravity, and permanence.
Santarém’s streets tell a quieter story of endurance. Narrow passageways, elevated viewpoints, and layered ruins create a cityscape where history feels close at hand, not distant. This is a place where time accumulates rather than disappears, and where the weight of the past is not ornamental but deeply felt. Long regarded as a crossroads between rural heartlands and urban centres, Santarém has absorbed centuries of influence while maintaining a distinctly introspective character.
Today, Santarém’s Gothic legacy has found new resonance within its contemporary cultural life. Independent spaces, music initiatives, and creative communities have emerged organically, drawing on the city’s dramatic setting and slower pace to foster experimentation and connection. It is this dialogue between past and present that gives Santarém its modern significance: a place where history does not sit behind glass, but actively informs a living, evolving underground culture.
